A recent survey asked communications professionals in Tennessee about their views of social media as it fits within a strategic communications plan. Similar to a survey that was conducted in 2010, the results found that practitioners place a greater value on social media than they did just two years ago.

Conducted by Interactive Springboard, the survey reported that 76% of respondents think “the return on investment in social media is well worth it,” compared with 62 percent who thought so in 2010. In 2012, 97% of respondents believed that “social media is an important component in any communications plan,” compared to 90 percent who agreed in 2010.

You were taught it’s not okay to brag, right? Join the club. But in today’s world, there are important and surprising reasons why high performing professionals need to regain this lost skill and start sharing their success stories more freely.

Join PRSA Lookout Chapter on May 16 at 11:30 a.m. at Niko’s Grill for a fun, highly interactive workshop led by leadership & workplace coach Darcy Eikenberg, ACC, author of Bring Your Superpowers to Work: Your Guide to More Clarity, Confidence and Control and founder of career & success site Red Cape Revolution.

In addition to the fresh techniques you’ll gain to tell the world about your own successes, you’ll discover:

•    Why we can no longer afford to consider “brag” a four-letter word;
•    The three reasons we need to start bragging today, and;
• How to brag so others don’t gag.

You’ll have the rare opportunity to share your stories in a friendly, encouraging environment—a place where you can’t make a mistake and experimentation is welcome. As an added bonus, you’ll get an opportunity to connect with several different people at the event—and their stories may offer you ideas to solve the challenges in your own workplace. Finally, you’ll uncover something great about someone else–and about yourself as well!

Get ready to master the art of bragging at PRSA Lookout on May 16. Register now. Click here to RSVP and pay online.

The Public Relations Society of America is currently conducting a survey regarding Wikipedia and public relations. The national organization is calling for all members to participate regarding the role of PR practitioners and engaging in Wikipedia. Per the note from Gerard Corbett, PRSA CEO and Chair:

I am writing you today to provide information on a matter of importance to every PRSA member. PRSA has been engaging in a series of discussions regarding the proper role of public relations professionals in editing entries on Wikipedia, the self-described “free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.” Given that Wikipedia is one of the most widely used information resources in the world, we believe it is important that our members are made aware of this ongoing debate.

Marcia DiStaso, co-chair of PRSA’s National Research Committee, has developed a survey that examines the profession’s experiences with Wikipedia. You can take the survey here.

Survey: Wikipedia and PR

We encourage you to send this survey to members of your Chapter, Section or Committee and ask them to take a few minutes to answer the questions. Please also post it to your website, LinkedIn groups, Facebook pages and other forums.

We believe that PR professionals should engage with Wikipedia in a responsible manner that respects the community’s rules and protocols, while also ensuring they act in their clients’ best interests. But the engagement must be a two-way street in which Wikipedia is willing to see and accommodate both sides of the issue.

We have made this position clear in a variety of forums. Recently, I wrote an op-ed for technology news publication, Techdirt, in which I made the case the for PR professionals editing Wikipedia. We have also provided the profession’s perspective in PRWeek, The Financial Times and through a special Facebook group dedicated to this discussion
